Best Replacement Battery for Porter-Cable 20V MAX: A 2026 Buyer's Guide

By CEENR Engineering · Updated October 9, 2026

Short answer

The best Porter-Cable 20V MAX replacement battery in 2026 meets four criteria: premium high-drain cells matched to each capacity (18650 for 5.0 and 6.0 Ah, 21700 for 8.0 Ah), model-specific safety and transport documentation, documented battery protections, and a direct-fit PCC685L-style slide. CEENR's 6.0 Ah Porter-Cable replacement ($45.99) and 8.0 Ah replacement ($59.99) are options to compare with a 3-year warranty. Porter-Cable's own largest 20V MAX pack is the 4.0 Ah PCC685L, so both give its tools more runtime per charge. Porter-Cable says the PCC685L works with all Porter-Cable 20V MAX tools, and its manuals list the same packs for the newer tools — including the PCCE720, which is sold as "V20" — so we list 43 verified tools. Porter-Cable's older 18V tools and Craftsman V20 tools take other packs. Avoid any pack under $20 with no cell rating, no certification numbers, a missing BMS list, or no US RMA address.

On this page

Porter-Cable 20V MAX built a large installed base of affordable drills, drivers, saws and combo kits. Many of those kits shipped with one or two small batteries — the 1.3 Ah PCC681L and 1.5 Ah PCC680L compact packs are the usual kit batteries — and a decade on, those packs are losing runtime. The line has also moved: in 2021 Porter-Cable announced new cordless tools for 2022 available exclusively through Tractor Supply, and those tools — brushless ones such as the PCCS300 reciprocating saw and PCCF920 impact wrench among them — run on the same 20V MAX packs.

So the buying question is two-part: which pack is safe and OEM-equivalent, and which tools it actually fits — including the 2022–23 tools, one of which, the PCCE720 oscillating tool, Porter-Cable sells as "V20". The four criteria below answer the first; the verified tool list answers the second.

The four buying criteria that actually matter

Aftermarket battery quality ranges enormously, from packs that match OEM performance to packs that fail dangerously within months. The difference comes down to four verifiable engineering criteria. Confirm all four before buying. If any one is missing, do not buy.

1. Premium high-drain cells

Inside every Porter-Cable 20V battery is a string of lithium-ion cells in 5S configuration — five in series for the 18V nominal / 20V maximum that Porter-Cable markets as "20V MAX." A 5.0-6.0 Ah pack uses ten 18650 cells (5S2P); an 8.0 Ah pack uses ten higher-capacity 21700 cells. The cells determine roughly 60% of real-world behavior: usable capacity, sustained current under load, cycle life, and heat handling.

For 5.0 Ah, the strong choice is a premium high-drain 18650 (2.5 Ah/cell). For 6.0 Ah, a higher-capacity premium high-drain 18650 (3.0 Ah/cell) makes a true 6.0 Ah pack. For 8.0 Ah, a premium high-drain 21700 (4.0 Ah-class) handles even high-draw Porter-Cable saws and impact wrenches without sag.

How to verify: Compare the cell specification with its datasheet and check the operating limits of the complete pack. Terms such as "Grade A" or "industrial grade" alone establish neither cell quality nor pack performance.

2. model-specific safety and transport documentation

IEC 62133-2 is a safety standard for portable sealed rechargeable lithium cells and batteries under intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. The standard’s scope is general; product evidence must identify the exact tested model.

How to verify: ask the seller for the safety report and UN 38.3 test summary for the exact battery model. Match the model number, issuing laboratory and report reference; a general certification logo is not model-specific evidence.

3. Documented battery protections

A battery management system can monitor and control charging and discharging. Functions and cutoff thresholds vary by model; check the documented operating limits rather than assuming a fixed number of protection layers.

4. Direct-fit PCC685L-style slide

Porter-Cable 20V MAX packs slide onto the tool on two rails and lock with a spring latch; the 4.0 Ah PCC685L is the full-size pack, the PCC680L and PCC681L the compact ones. The rail and latch dimensions are precise to fractions of a millimeter; a poorly-machined shell wobbles, fails to release, or leaves contact gaps that arc under load. Quality aftermarket packs are molded from glass-filled polycarbonate with copper-alloy contacts and slide onto Porter-Cable 20V MAX tools and chargers without forcing. Higher-capacity packs hold more cells, and the 8.0 Ah uses larger 21700 cells, so it sits taller than a PCC685L; the slide and latch are the same.

Which Porter-Cable tools take a 20V MAX pack

Porter-Cable says its PCC685L works with all Porter-Cable 20V MAX tools, and its manuals list the PCC680L, PCC681L and PCC685L packs across the line, newer ones adding the 2.0 Ah PCC682L. That includes the 2022–23 tools: the PCCE720 oscillating tool is sold as "PORTER CABLE V20*", but its manual lists the Porter-Cable 20V MAX packs, as do the manuals of the PCCS300, PCCS340, PCCG400, PCCM300, PCCF920, PCCF930, PCCF940, PCCGG001, PCCD750 and PCCW210; the PCCS500 circular saw's manual prints no pack table, but Porter-Cable benchmarks it on a 4.0 Ah 20V MAX pack. Three things are easy to mix up with Porter-Cable 20V MAX but take a different battery:

  • Craftsman V20 tools — a different socket: the CMCM300, the Craftsman twin of the PCCM300 cut-off tool, lists only Craftsman packs, and adapter makers sell adapters between the two systems.
  • Porter-Cable 18V tools (PC18B NiCd and PC18BLX lithium-ion packs), a different battery — even the ones with a PCC model number, such as the PCC475 18V clampsaw — and 8V MAX tools such as the PCC842L screwdriver.
  • Other Stanley Black & Decker brands: Black+Decker 20V MAX and Stanley FatMax 20V MAX manuals list only their own packs, and owners report those packs are keyed differently from Porter-Cable's. CEENR makes a separate pack for each — buy the one for your tool.

The takeaway: the CEENR packs offer more capacity than anything in Porter-Cable's own 20V MAX lineup, which tops out at 4.0 Ah, with premium high-drain cells and a 3-year warranty against Porter-Cable's 2 years on its batteries. Porter-Cable's PCCS300 saw manual recommends the 4.0 Ah pack for best results; the 6.0 and 8.0 Ah hold 1.5 and 2 times its energy.

Porter-Cable 20V MAX tool compatibility — what works, what does not

Quality aftermarket 20V MAX batteries work across the Porter-Cable slide-pack range — we list 43 verified Porter-Cable 20V MAX tools, each checked against Porter-Cable's own manuals and product pages:

  • Drills, hammer drills and drivers (PCC601, PCC607 brushless, PCC620 and PCC621 hammer drills, PCCD750 right-angle drill): work with 5.0, 6.0 or 8.0 Ah packs.
  • Impact drivers, impact wrenches and ratchets (PCC641, PCC647 brushless, PCC740, PCCF920 and PCCF940 impact wrenches, PCCF930 ratchet): higher sustained current — 6.0 Ah or larger recommended over a compact pack for heavy fastening.
  • Saws and grinders (PCC660 and PCCS500 circular saws, PCC670, PCCS300 and PCCS340 reciprocating saws, PCC650 jig saw, PCC761 and PCCG400 grinders, PCCM300 cut-off tool): the biggest beneficiaries of a 6.0 or 8.0 Ah upgrade; runtime roughly scales with capacity.
  • Sanders, multi-tools and nailers (PCCW205 sander, PCC710 and PCCE720 oscillating tools, PCC790, PCC791 and PCC792 nailers and stapler): take the same packs.
  • Radios, speaker, lights, grease gun and USB charging device (PCCR701, PCC771, PCC772, PCC700, PCCL500, PCCGG001, PCC798): take the same packs; we list the 5.0 and 6.0 Ah, not the taller 8.0 Ah, for the radios, the speaker, the PCCL500 task light and the PCC780 wet tile saw. The PCCR701 charges the pack when plugged in; we haven't tested CEENR packs on its built-in charger, so charge them on a stand-alone charger.

What does not work: Porter-Cable 18V and 8V MAX tools, Craftsman V20 tools, and Black+Decker or Stanley FatMax 20V MAX tools. We found no 20V outdoor tools in Porter-Cable's catalog.

Red flags — how to spot a dangerous Porter-Cable aftermarket

Do not buy if 2 or more apply

  • No IEC 62133 certificate number listed on the product page or in documentation
  • No cell rating or test data (vague claims like "premium cells" or "Grade A Li-ion" with nothing behind them)
  • Price below $20 for a 5-6 Ah pack or below $35 for an 8 Ah pack (real cell cost alone exceeds $13 for a 5 Ah pack)
  • BMS protection list missing, or lists only 2-3 of the 6 standard protections
  • Seller has no US business or RMA address beyond an anonymous email
  • Check the stated weight and capacity against documentation for the exact model; weight alone cannot establish the cell count or safety.
  • A "lifetime warranty" + "best price guaranteed" combo — both are typically marketing fabrication on disappearing-seller listings

What is actually inside a CEENR Porter-Cable replacement battery

The full bill of materials for CEENR's 6.0 Ah Porter-Cable replacement:

  • Cells: premium high-drain 18650, 5S2P (five in series for 18V nominal / 20V maximum, two strings in parallel for 6.0 Ah at 3.0 Ah per cell). Complete-pack current limits require a model-specific specification.
  • Battery protection: check the model-specific operating limits and protection specifications. Cell current ratings alone do not establish the complete pack rating.
  • Housing: glass-filled polycarbonate matched to the PCC685L-style slide. Seats in Porter-Cable 20V MAX slide-pack tools and chargers.
  • Safety documentation: request the report and transport test summary for the exact battery model before relying on a certification claim.
  • Warranty: 3 years from purchase, US-based RMA. Email info@ceenr.com with your order number for return authorization.

The 5.0 Ah variant uses premium high-drain 18650 cells for the lightest pack; the 8.0 Ah uses premium high-drain 21700 cells for the highest-draw tools. Check the operating limits and compatibility of the exact model.

Alternative: PDnation Pro + Porter-Cable Brand Mount

If you also run DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, or other 18V/20V cordless ecosystems alongside Porter-Cable, the CEENR PDnation Pro 8.0Ah ($79.99) plus a Porter-Cable Brand Mount ($15.99) totals $95.98 and serves three roles:

  1. A Porter-Cable 20V MAX tool battery (premium high-drain 21700 cells) for 33 verified 20V MAX tools with an open battery port (listed on the Brand Mount page) — not the radios, speaker, lights, grease gun or USB charging device, the PCC780 wet tile saw, or the PCC795 wet/dry vac, which isn't yet checked with the mount.
  2. A DeWalt / Milwaukee / Makita / Bosch tool battery (swap to a different $15.99 Brand Mount — the same pack runs 1,600+ tools across 10 brands).
  3. A 100W USB-C PD power bank (charges compatible USB-C PD laptops, plus iPad, phone, jobsite lights).

For single-brand Porter-Cable-only users, the dedicated CEENR 6.0 Ah ($45.99) or 8.0 Ah ($59.99) pack is the simpler, cheaper choice. For anyone running more than one brand — or who wants USB-C laptop power from the same battery — the PDnation Pro earns its premium. The full system is in the universal power tool battery guide.

Bottom line

The best Porter-Cable 20V MAX replacement battery in 2026 meets four verifiable criteria: premium high-drain cells (18650 and 21700), model-specific safety and transport documentation, documented battery protections, and a direct-fit PCC685L-style slide. CEENR's 5.0 Ah ($35.99), 6.0 Ah ($45.99) and 8.0 Ah ($59.99) each are options to compare with a 3-year US-warehoused warranty — and because Porter-Cable's own packs stop at 4.0 Ah, the 6.0 and 8.0 Ah give its tools more runtime than any Porter-Cable pack. We list 43 verified 20V MAX tools, the brushless tools and the "V20"-branded PCCE720 included; Porter-Cable 18V tools and Craftsman V20 tools are the exceptions. Using a third-party battery does not by itself void your tool warranty.

If you run more than one cordless brand, the PDnation Pro at $79.99 plus a $15.99 Porter-Cable Brand Mount covers Porter-Cable tool power, cross-brand use, and USB-C laptop charging from one 8.0 Ah battery.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the best replacement battery for Porter-Cable 20V MAX tools in 2026?

Compare capacity, cell format, model-specific safety and transport documents, operating limits, and the fit for your tool and charger. CEENR's 6.0 Ah Porter-Cable replacement ($45.99) and 8.0 Ah replacement ($59.99) are options to compare; both come with a 3-year warranty. Porter-Cable's own largest 20V MAX pack is the 4.0 Ah PCC685L, so both give its tools more runtime per charge than any Porter-Cable pack.

Do Porter-Cable "V20" tools take Porter-Cable 20V MAX batteries?

Yes. Porter-Cable sells its PCCE720 brushless oscillating tool as "PORTER CABLE V20*", but its manual lists Porter-Cable's own 20V MAX packs: PCC680L, PCC681L, PCC682L and PCC685L. So do the manuals of the other 2022–23 tools, such as the brushless PCCS300 reciprocating saw, PCCG400 grinder, PCCF920 impact wrench and PCCM300 cut-off tool. They do not take Craftsman V20 packs: the Craftsman twin of the PCCM300, the CMCM300, has its own manual that lists only Craftsman packs.

Do Porter-Cable 20V MAX batteries fit Black+Decker or Craftsman V20 tools?

No. They are separate Stanley Black & Decker platforms: Porter-Cable 20V MAX manuals list only Porter-Cable packs, Black+Decker 20V MAX, Stanley FatMax and Craftsman V20 manuals list only their own, adapter makers sell Craftsman V20 ↔ Porter-Cable adapters because those sockets differ, and owners report Black+Decker and Stanley FatMax packs are keyed differently from Porter-Cable's. CEENR makes a separate pack for each brand, so buy the one for your tool.

Will an aftermarket battery void my Porter-Cable tool warranty?

Not automatically. Under the US Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (15 USC § 2302(c)) a warrantor generally cannot make coverage conditional on using its own branded batteries. But Porter-Cable can decline a repair for damage a third-party pack causes, and its manuals tell you to use only the specifically designated battery packs. Ordinary tool failures unrelated to the battery are a separate matter. The aftermarket battery carries its own warranty (3 years for CEENR), separate from Porter-Cable's.

Does Porter-Cable make a 5.0, 6.0 or 8.0 Ah 20V MAX battery?

Compare capacity, cell format, model-specific safety and transport documents, operating limits, and the fit for your tool and charger. CEENR 5.0, 6.0 and 8.0 Ah use the same 20V MAX slide, which makes them the capacity upgrade for saws, grinders and impact wrenches that run a small pack flat quickly. The 8.0 Ah is taller and heavier, so the tool feels less balanced.

How long does a quality aftermarket Porter-Cable battery last?

CEENR replacement batteries use the stated figure of 1,000+ cycles. Actual capacity and service life depend on charging, use and storage; the figure does not specify a retained-capacity endpoint.

Do Porter-Cable 20V MAX batteries fit Porter-Cable 18V tools?

No. Porter-Cable's older 18V tools use other packs (PC18B NiCd and PC18BLX lithium-ion), and Porter-Cable support says 18V and 20V batteries aren't cross-compatible. A few 18V tools carry a PCC model number anyway — the PCC475 clampsaw, for example — so check the voltage printed on the tool.

Does the CEENR Porter-Cable battery fit my tools and charger?

Yes, if the tool takes a Porter-Cable 20V MAX slide battery. CEENR 5.0, 6.0 and 8.0 Ah Porter-Cable packs use the PCC685L-style slide and latch, so they seat in 20V MAX drills, drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, sanders, nailers and the rest of the verified list, brushless tools included, and charge on Porter-Cable 20V MAX chargers such as the PCC692L and PCC699L or the CEENR 6A Porter-Cable fast charger. The 8.0 Ah uses larger 21700 cells and sits taller; we don't list it for the radios, the speaker, the PCCL500 task light or the PCC780 wet tile saw, which seat the pack in a battery port, roll cage or base pocket the taller pack may not clear.
